The Emsworth Swan Man

Meeting Gordon, Emsworth's legendary swan carer who tends to the birds twice daily as a tribute to his late wife.

Finally caught up with Gordon this morning. I’d been trying to meet him for a few weeks on my morning walks.

Everyone in Emsworth knows Gordon. He’s down at the millpond twice a day, every day, rain or shine. Feeds the swans, gives them water, checks them over. He knows each one by name. He was telling me about one of the young females who’d been missing for a few months - she came back to see him today.

The swans know him too. They practically ran to him when he arrived.

He handles them like they’re puppies. No hesitation, no fuss. They’re completely comfortable around him. Luckily they tolerated me too.

Gordon lost his wife five years ago. They used to spend weekends together watching the swans. Now he takes care of them as an ode to her.
