Emsworth - A Break in the Rain
A brief dry spell during the wettest winter in decades provided the perfect excuse for a walk around Emsworth Mill Pond. Swans, boats, and couples holding hands by the water.

Finally a break in the rain. It’s been relentless since New Year - Hampshire had its second wettest January since 1836, and some parts of the UK saw 40 consecutive days of rain. I was desperate to get out with the camera so grabbed it and headed to Emsworth Mill Pond.

The pond was formed in the 1760s when they dammed the River Ems to power the Slipper Mill. Back then Emsworth had four working mills supplying meal to the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. Hard to picture it now.

Loads of swans about. Much calmer than the ones at Broadmarsh - these weren’t trying to fight anyone for bread.

Boats everywhere - some on the water, some pulled up onto the hard. Clearly everyone had the same idea as me because the place was busy. Spotted a few old couples holding hands along the promenade, just taking their time. Cute.

The town centre has a good selection of charity shops and local family-run places - the kind of high street that hasn’t been completely taken over by chains. I’ve been here in summer and early morning too, gorgeous at both times. Definitely want to come back when the weather’s better and spend a bit more time exploring.
